Water Mist from Austria protects Los Angeles' Metro

The Aquasys high-pressure water mist firefighting system will soon ensure increased safety of passengers on the red metro line in Los Angeles.

Train manufacturer Talgo is currently equipping 37 sets of the existing A650 metro trains with the high-pressure water mist (HPWM) system developed by the IWMA member from Austria. This is the first time that this innovative technology is being used in North America.

AQUASYS managed to gain trust and recognition for their technology in the USA through comprehensive real fire tests and numerous hydraulic preliminary tests that proofed the system well capable of keeping various fires, including those involving packed travel bags, well below the permissible limits under control. In addition, the environmental conditions are harmless to people 1.5 metres away from the fire.

For its HPWM system, AQUASYS uses clear water without additives for durability or anti-freeze protection, thus scoring points in terms of sustainability and environmental compatibility. Thanks to various measures, the HPWM system remains sound even if it freezes through completely.

In order to make optimum use of the available space and avoid having to adjust the train structure, the required high-pressure water mist bottles were manufactured according to the existing dimensions. They can thus be easily inserted under the seats or trains.

To a large extent, AQUASYS has prefabricated the individual system modules of the supply units in Linz, Austria, thus enabling easy integration of the HPWM system which can then be installed directly on site.

Overall, AQUASYS and Talgo have successfully implemented an extremely space-saving concept, following the latest European directives and specifically agreed American standards.
