News about the publication of the EN 14972

EN 14972-1:2020 - Title: Fixed firefighting systems - Water mist systems - Part 1: Design, installation, inspection and maintenance

Scope: This document specifies requirements and gives recommendations for the design, installation, inspection and maintenance of all types of fixed land-based water mist systems. It is intended to apply to water mist automatic nozzle systems and water mist deluge systems supplied by stand alone or pumped systems. It covers only applications and occupancies which are covered by the fire test protocols of the EN 14972 series. Aspects of water mist associated with explosion protection and/or use within vehicles are not covered by this document. This document does not cover all legislative requirements. In certain countries specific national regulations apply and take precedence over this document. Users of this document are advised to inform themselves of the applicability or non-applicability for this document by their national responsible authorities.

Status: published

Available since 23rd Dec 2020 (according to the CEN webpage)

The document is now available at national level and the member countries have until 30th June 2021 to implement its publication, and thereby give it the status of a national standard, and at the same time withdraw CEN/TS 14972:2011. The dates when the official documents will be available may vary from country to country.

CEN members have until 30th June 2021 to implement EN 14972-1:2020 as a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or by endorsement, and withdraw any conflicting national standards.

Please note:

  1. Standards are not retrospective so anything in place (planned or contractual) before publication and implementation in any specific country remain in place
  2. The EN 14972 series are voluntary standards so standards like NFPA 750 can still be used

With regards to national standards the CEN rules say that the conflicting parts of standards are obliged to be withdrawn when the EN series are published. Parts of standards that are not covered can remain, management of this is up to the national standardization bodies. Two possibilities are  writing a national foreword and / or national annexes for each of the parts and keeping what is not conflicting.
