Two cars caught fire on the motorway no. 7 in Hamburg on Thursday morning after an accident in the Elbtunnel. Temporarily, the tunnel was completely closed. Traffic was later reopened in both directions, and one northbound lane was kept closed overnight.
In a rear-end collision, three cars had collided in the first tube of the Elbtunnel heading north. Six people, including a child, were slightly injured and were taken to hospital. After the accident, two of the cars were completely engulfed in flames and toxic smoke spread inside the tunnel. A large number of firefighters were deployed to extinguish the cars with foam.
